Scheduled Services - Home & Commercial Grounds Maintenance

This page describes the specific tasks to be performed during scheduled residential or commercial grounds maintenance work by Horizon Landscape. These regularly scheduled tasks include:

In addition to these regularly scheduled maintenance services, additional services are also available.

Lawn Area management

mowingMowing
All turf areas shall be inspected and policed for litter and debris prior to each mowing.

All turf is to be mowed weekly beginning in April and through the end of October, with three additional mowings in November and December to remove leaves, for a total of 28-30 mowings in the year. Prior to the first mowing, a spring cleanup will be performed, during which the lawn and bed areas will be cleaned of debris and blown through. All bed edges will be spaded and line edged and all sidewalks and curbs will be mechanically edged.

Mowing height for all lawn areas shall be no less than 2 1/2", and not to exceed 3 1/2": The turf shall be cut at a uniform height, preventing scalping and uneven cutting. Mower blades shall be maintained in a sharp condition for a clean, even cut. Any excess clippings shall be dispersed and/or collected to prevent damage to existing lawn areas or an unsightly appearance.

edgingEdging
All sidewalks, curb lines, concrete slabs, bed edges and the immediate high visual areas shall be mechanically edged as needed to maintain a neat, clean appearance, approximately twice per month.

Trimming or "Weed Eating"
Trimming shall be performed around all road signs, guard posts, trees, shrubs, utility poles and other obstacles, taking special care to not damage trees and shrubs. The grass to be trimmed shall not be trimmed to less than the desired height of cut determined by the mowing operation.

Clean/Blow Walks
At the conclusion of each visit, walks and driveways adjacent to work areas are to be swept or blown clean.

organic based lawn care program

sprayingTurf Fertilization
Applications of fertilizers shall be carried out to maintain proper nutrient levels throughout the year. We perform regular soil tests on our home and commercial grounds maintenance projects to insure that the proper fertilizer formulation is applied. Turf shall be fertilized with a well-balanced organic based fertilizer four times per year. A total of 4 lbs. of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. will be applied per year. Natural soil amendments, bio-stimulants, and micronutrients are incorporated to maintain a consistent, lush, green appearance.

Weed, Insect and Disease Control of Turf Areas
Your turf areas will be kept in a healthy, lush green condition through the use of IPM (Integrated Pest Management) Through the use of IPM techniques, appropriate measures can be taken to treat affected areas in a ecologically sound and timely manner.

Lime
Ph levels are monitored yearly and an application of granular lime is applied in the fall to maintain optimum intake of nutrients by the grass plants.

Aeration, Power rake, and Slit seeding
The performance of your turf during the year and the amount of thatch in your lawn will determine how your lawn needs to be renovated. Aeration will pull plugs of soil to the surface to loosen compaction and mix soil into the thatch layer. Aeration also allows the roots to expand to encourage the lawn to strengthen and thicken. Seed will then be applied to bare areas that have developed during the course of the season. The soil plugs will be left on the surface so they can naturally break down and mix into the thatch and crown layer. When heavy thatch layers exist, your lawn will be mechanically raked to remove excess thatch. In thinner stands of turf, seed will be mechanically injected into the soil with a slit seeder.

Watering
If irrigation will affect the lawn care service we perform, a notice will be left with instructions as to what watering requirements are necessary for the products to perform optimally. In general, watering should be avoided for 12 hours following weed or disease control applications. A full watering should be made after any other applications and regular irrigation should be applied after seeding.

Shrub Bed management

Care of shrub beds
During home and commercial grounds maintenance all bed areas will be policed weekly throughout the season for weeds, paper and debris. All planter beds, tree circles, sidewalk cracks, etc., are to be sprayed periodically to control unwanted grasses and broadleaf weeds. Chemical practices shall not be a substitute for hand weeding where the latter is required for complete removal. All planter beds are to have one application of pre-emergence herbicide per year at the beginning of the season. Adequate mulch is required for suitable weed control.

Care of ornamental plants
Fertilizing of shrubs and ornamental trees is to be done once in the fall. All materials will be a well-balanced, organic based type fertilizer, including soil amendments, bio-stimulants and micronutrients. Pests on ornamental trees and shrubs are controlled through the IPM technique. Evergreen shrubs are treated with an anti-desiccant to prevent water loss during the winter months.

trimmingPruning
Shrubbery will be pruned to insure the correct shape and natural growth habit for the area they are growing in once per year. Tip prune selected branchlets of low growing shrub or groundcover masses to maintain an even overall height and promote fullness. Groundcover plantings will be pruned as required to restrain perimeter growth to within planting bed areas where adjacent to walks and curbs. Pruning of ornamental trees shall be done to enhance natural growth. Ornamental tree pruning will include the removal of dead, damaged, improper branching and diseased portions of the plant. All cuts shall be flush and clean, leaving no stubs or tearing of bark. Emergency or minor pruning shall be performed when needed. Provide remedial attention and repair to shrubs and trees as appropriate by season or in response to incidental damage.

Leaf Removal

Removal of all leaves from lawns, and walkways will be completed throughout the season as needed to maintain a clean appearance throughout. Starting in October, the entire property, including bed and lawn areas, will be cleaned of all leaves, with a final cleanup in December, during which time the lawn will be cut short for the winter. Occasionally the lawn may be mowed as a method of economically and efficiently picking up leaves that are scattered across the lawn or blown out of beds. When appropriate or necessary, leaves will be removed from your property using our vacuum truck or left on the street for your town to pick up.

Irrigation

We will activate irrigation systems during April and May. This includes observation of all portions of the system and performing necessary adjustments, cleaning, or other work required to re-establish proper irrigation functions. We perform necessary site visits during the year as requested by the customer. Systems are shut off and completely winterized with compressed air no later than November 30th. Design, installation and service of your Irrigation system is only a phone call away.
